Moving divisions again, Davis beat Mario Barrios to win the WBA (Regular) super-lightweight title. His last fight was in December, beating Isaac Cruz to retain the WBA (Regular) lightweight title.
Romero made his pro debut in 2016. He won the interim WBA lightweight title in August 2020 against Jackson Marinez. In his last bout in July, Romero faced Anthony Yigit. The interim title was not on the line because Yigit missed weight. Romero beat him in the seventh round via TKO.

The two were supposed to fight on Dec. 5, but Romero was pulled from the fight after sexual assault allegations made against him. No charges were filed after a few weeks, and the bout was back on.
